The HUE VALUE CHROMA Munsell Color Charts are a practical reference tool for visual artists, painters, designers and illustrators. They are a perfect substitute for much more expensive Munsell color charts or catalogs on the market. Based on Albert Munsell’s systematic approach in defining color these printed color charts serve you as a color mixing guide. You can cut the color swatches out and hold them next to an object or you can place the swatches under a glass palette.

While there are a handful Munsell products on the market these are either extremely limited in the number of swatches or too expensive for a hobbyist artist.

With this investment you can save hundreds of Dollars. Industry standard color references have a wider gamut and are expensive. But what you as an artist need is a color chart which supports you identifying the colors around you – nothing more, nothing less.

With this investment you can save hundreds of Dollars because professional color charts are expensive and serve a purpose that you do not need for your art. What you need at your easel is a color chart which helps you to mix a specific color – if it is a skin color or the local color of an object.

Not sure if your printer is capable of printing these color charts? Download this reference and print it out. If all swatches are visible and the print looks like the file on the computer screen then your printer should be capable of printing the color charts.

What does this Munsell eBook contain?

The package contains 40 sheets of printable color charts (10 hues in 4 increments), an 11 step value scale, a value checker, a color balance card for color adjustment of your photos in photo editing software like Lightroom or Photoshop, neutral sheets in 30%, 50%, 70% and 100% black, printable nets for colored paper models & instructions on how to use all this.

All this comes in a PDF file which can be viewed and printed with Acrobat Reader (free download).

I am not sure if my printer is capable to print the color charts. How can I find out before I buy?

You can download this reference and print it out. If all swatches are visible and the print looks like the file on the computer screen then your printer should be capable of printing the color charts.

Or do you have photos (e.g. from vacation) printed with your printer and the print looks fine and has no obvious color distortion? Then your printer most likely is capable of printing the color charts.

The range of printable color swatches – the „Gammut“ – depends on different factors: printer, paper, inks. At all three ends of a color’s property (Hue, Value, Chroma) good results can vary. If you do not have an inkjet printer or your printer’s output is not sufficient, you can let the file be printed at a copy shop.

What size are the individual pages?

The eBook comes in DIN A5 size but if your printer is in a different format/aspect ratio, i.e. US Letter, you can print the color charts with the “Fit to page” setting. This might distort the individual swatches a bit but this has no effect on their usage. Due to its scalability the eBook is even printable on larger paper i.e. DIN A3.

If you would like to print and cut out the paper models make sure to use a printer setting which does not distort those pages. Otherwise you will not be able to glue the paper model together as intented.

What does the package cost?

The “Munsell Color Book” by XRite costs about $1,000. There are also other Munsell books available for $75 and more. These HUE VALUE CHROMA – Munsell Color Charts cost $12.90. The rest depends on your usage: Let’s say you only want to have the color swatches for skin tones then only two or three sheets need to be printed. Let’s also say you lose some swatches or they are worn you can print additional sheets whenever you want. If you buy one of the available books you better not lose the swatches.

Can I print the Munsell Color Charts on a laser printer?

It has not been tested how the color charts come out with a laser printer so no guarantee given here. It is advisable to print the Color Charts with an inkjet printer on a good quality photo paper like Kirkland Signature Professional Glossy Photo Paper (Affiliate link).
